Philadelphia: How Much Art Can You Take?

September 5th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

You jerks probably thought that I forgot about you or that I died. No such luck, I’m back with a bang (yeah, yeah) and here to tell our Philadelphian readers about some pretty fantastic art openings that are going on tonight.

First and foremost, get thee to Reward (55 North 2nd Street) for a live art installation by my homeboy and co-Fun Vampire founder / guy who’s been in lots of bands i’ve liked / graphic designer / artist / bike rider / friend of pit bulls / other weird things - Nicholas Hans.

There will be free drinks and music and the normal First Friday junk. Plus you get to check out Reward, a brand new store that isn’t even open yet. Reward is located at 55 North 2nd Street in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia.

This jawn starts at 4PM and goes until whenever Hans finishes. i just talked to him and he told me that it should end around 9pm-ish.

Next head to the opening party for the Megaword storefront project (125 N. 11th St). I am completely psyched for this! Megawords Magazine founders Anthony Smyrski and Dan Murphy will produce a month-long series of events in a storefront space in Center City. This site will serve as Megawords’ focal point for permanent and rotating installations, guest speakers and artists, musical performances, workshops, and film screenings. Here’s a PDF of their month long schedule. Don’t sleep - there’s some A+ shit going on and if you blink, you might miss it.

Next, walk about a block and a half over to Space 1026 (2nd floor 1026 Arch St) for Ebonza Sungondora Unillumina Faunandflora:: Sacred Asymmetry. Fucked if I know what that means but A) 1026 is always cool B) the 1026 website sez that you can “meet Jefferson Mayday Mayday Vimana and Maia Serena of Immaginarium. Watersports will be performing at 9pm and VC Childcraft will lead the opening ceremonies. Seven Eight, a Brooklyn based project which aims to make art affordable to the masses, will be installing a gumball style vending machine containing 300 extra small original pieces of art. At Ebonza Sungondora Unillumina Faunandflora attendees can pick up the newest issue of Permanent Ink Magazine as well as decks of Tarot cards designed by exhibiting artists.”

Then, walk upstairs at Overkill Studio (307 Market Street) to check out some more killer artwork.

Finally, hop in a cab or steal a bike to get out to West Philly for a night of excellent music with Pink Reason, Drunk Driver, Women, Dog On The Loose and RAWAR at the Party Mansion (5034 willows Ave). Shit is going to be wild.

Then go home and go to sleep or go to a bar and drink until you fall down or something.

The next night, you should, wait, you NEED to head over to Studio 27.28 (2728 Girard Street) for the Cassandra Warren & Eric de Jesus opening. I’ve never met Eric de Jesus but I’ll embarrass myself here and say that his old fanzine Raw Pogo On The Scaffold was probably my all time favorite fanzine. It had it all - great writing, great artwork, stuff I didn’t understand and history. To a teenaged me, it was the Pennsylvania bible of What We Do Is Secret (with a dash of the Red Wine Emo). Weird Panther Party forever, motherfuckers.

And, to wind down your Saturday night, go to Johnny Brenda’s to see The Psychic Paramount with Arbouretum and Pontiak.
