Then NASAimages.org (a project run by the internet archive) may be your dream come true! The site just launched, and looks like it’s still in a testing stage, but it seems like it will be a really good resource. All images are archived and tagged by dates, keywords, categories, etc. and have sidebars with scientific information and descriptions for each image. There’s also a spaceflight timeline, so you can view images from a certain year or time period, even if you didn’t know exact details. Also, if you get annoyed by unlabeled false-color images like I do, it seems like many of the images on this site are labeled appropriately, so as not to mislead anyone (though not all). They also have a lot of video, and provide links to the URLs where the image were originally posted (not all is directly from NASA’s website, there are many more obscure sites that have exclusively posted NASA images).
They have some neat features, like “workspaces” where you can keep track of favorite images, presentations that you can make and share with friends, and inline cropping-and-zooming. Also there will soon be custom printing of images- hopefully they will have affordable, high-quality images– if they do, I know I will be ordering a lot!
