More BSG science content

Some of you may remember the article I wrote about space in science fiction shows, specifically Battlestar Galactica. Well, apparently there was a panel at the San Diego Comic Con yesterday called “The Science Behind Science Fiction” which included Kevin Grazier, the science adviser for BSG. If only I had been there! Luckily, other people were. Read all about it, after the jump.

i09 reported on the panel, and says that the biggest BSG science blunder was in the episode Water, where a breach in the hull of the ship caused water to spill out into space, but did not cause the ship to repel backwards. Grazier said, “I missed the physics and we had more drama. I’m sorry I was wrong it won’t happen again.”

He said the high point of good science in BSG was the episode A Day In The Life, where Callie and Tyrol shoot into the vacuum of space through an airlock and into another ship. Like the movie Sunshine, they survive the short blast through space (though in Sunshine, Harvey should have gotten the bends and didn’t, whereas Tyrol did get it in BSG). “They wouldn’t have exploded or been frozen,” he said. “Yes, they would have frozen eventually, but not in the few seconds they were in vacuum.”

Phil “Bad Astronomer” Plait was also in the panel, and I hope someone reports on what he said as well. He streamed the panel live, but I wasn’t able to watch, and apparently it hasn’t been archived. I’ll keep an eye out and report back if I find anything else out.
