So! The X-Files: I Want To Believe comes out tonight at midnight. Unfortunately I’m not seeing it tonight, I have to wait until tomorrow night, but I figured I’d post background info on the show for those of you who are seeing the film but may not be caught up in the series.
Here’s a timeline of the last few seasons (which no one really watched because Mulder & Scully were barely in them). Obviously the movie will gloss over most (if not all) of these events, but there might be some subtle references for fans.
Scully is pregnant, presumably with Mulder.
Mulder gets abducted by aliens, no one can find him.
Scully finds out Mulder has some kind of alien disease, but she still can’t find him.
She finds Mulder dead in a field, wrapped in a blanket. There’s a guy who can heal people just by touching them, and Scully tries to get him to Mulder. Unfortunately, a UFO takes this guy away.
Mulder isn’t breathing, there’s nothing they can do for him, he dies. They have a funeral for him.
Then they find a kid who had this same alien virus/ brain disease/ alien growing inside him/ whatever it was, and thought he was dead too, but realized it was just some weird coma-state, and they think Mulder must have the same thing and must actually be alive.
So- they dig him up, he is indeed alive, and they take him to the hospital.
Krycek tells Skinner he has a vaccine but won’t give it to Mulder unless he makes sure Scully does not finish her pregnancy, because there is something very important/ wrong about the child, and it must not be born.
Skinner has a tough decision to make, but ultimately choses the life of Scully’s child over Mulder.
Mulder miraculously becomes better without the vaccine.
Mulder then goes on a couple cases, gets obsessed, hunts around in records he shouldn’t, and gets kicked out of the FBI.
Scully takes a leave of absence due to her pregnancy.
Then there are a bunch of episodes with Doggett and Rayez going about cases as normal, with no Mulder or Skully at all.
Scully and Mulder go out into the middle of nowhere for the birth, because a bunch of UFO/alien cultists believe their child is linked to ancient UFOs and must be taken from them/ must die.
A while later, Mulder then disappears, Scully won’t say where he is or how to contact him. He’s gone because his life is in danger due to the crazy supersoldier subplot, later we find out that he may have killed someone.
Then a bunch of time goes by, he’s still in hiding. The UFO cultists break into Scully’s house and try to kill her child. The Lone Gunmen help out.
Then the Lone Gunmen are killed while trying to protect the world from an alien virus.
Scully gives up William for adoption.
Mulder gets caught and sentenced to death for killing someone.
Scully and Skinner break him out, obviously
Then they go to New Mexico to meet a ‘wise man’ who turns out to be the cigarette smoking man. Some black helicopters blow up the pueblo where the cigarette smoking man is, moments after Mulder and Scully leave.
The last scene is in a motel- Mulder and Scully are presumed dead. They now have to stay in hiding, especially Mulder.
How they are going to gloss over all this and have Mulder and Scully back together working a case I have no idea. I guess we’ll all find out very soon!
