Philadelphia Weekend Picks!

June 20th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

We’ve got a festival. We’ve got great weather. We’ve got some stuff that I’m doing. Philly, this weekend is gonna be fiiiiiiiiiine.

Remember, if you wanna get listed, send us your tips / event listings.

FRIDAY

Deadheads rejoice! Phil Lesh & Friends with special guest Levon Helm (nice!) are going to get you doing that hippie spin-around-in-a-circle dance at Festival PierLabuda Confession: I saw The Dead twice back in the day. Minus one thousand Punk Points. 5:30pm. $39.50.

Get your old school Summer block party on at the Mann Center with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly and Chaka Khan. 8pm. $55-$105.

The Susquehanna Bank Center has Pearl Jam with opening act Ted Leo & The Pharmacists. Good for Ted. 7:30pm. $48-$68.

The Khyber has El Toro De Oro, Onita, The Old Souls, Handsome Jack, and American Buffalo playing downstairs. 9pm. $8Upstairs And Dim Sum presents Spin The Bottle with  Gordon Bombay and the Black Locust. 9pm. Free.

Robotique is back at the Medusa Lounge with Mike Tee and Billy W. 10pm-2am.

The Troc hosts the Popped! Festival Kickoff Party with DJ Steven Bloodbath, White Ts + White Belts DJs, and Slick Rick with the Eclectic Collective. 18+. 8pm. $15.

The Ladies of Hip-Hop 2008 Festival is going to be at Fluid on Friday night. The jam is hosted by Stef Tataz. Ethel Cee with DJ Ultraviolet open it up but then watch out because they’ve got Philly’s own Bahamadia up on the mic with DJ Statik closing things out. Bahamadia is seriously suuuuuuuper ILL. 10pm-2am. $10.

SATURDAY

Popped! Festival continues at Drexel University with Vampire Weekend, Mates of State, Gogol Bordello, Crystal Castles, Dan Deacon, Mr. Lif, Hoots & Hellmouth, and The Ting Tings. Sounds fascinating. All Ages. $32.50.

Sun City Girls were one of the weirdest bands to come out of the first wave of American hardcore. Drummer Charles Gocher passed away in 2007. After his death, SCG members/brothers Alan and Rick Bishop announced that they would no longer perform or record music using the Sun City Girls name. Johnny Brenda’s has A Tribute to the Sun City Girls - Brothers Unconnected with Alan Bishop & Richard Bishop. This should be epic. 8pm. $12.

Fluid continues The Ladies of Hip-Hop 2008 Festival when TastyTreats presents Beverly Bond plus DJ Mike Nyce and ?uestlove. $10.

England Belongs to Twee is back at The Khyber with me (Labuda, stupid), McKee and special guest DJ HTSHELL (aka Herbie from Brown Recluse Sings!) cranking out hit after hit of indiepop and punk rock. It’s one of the most fun nights I’ve ever been involved with. 21+. Free!

You wanna get crazy but don’t dig the punk rock? The Barbary has The Bounce featuring club anthems and party bangers with Emil & Bo Bliz plus special guest Dave Nada. Trust us, Dave Nada is that dude! 10pm. $5.

The M-Room has the Double Vision party featuring DJ’s Matt Nordstrom, Okeef, Bryon Stout and Nanotech. 9pm.

And, finally, if you really feel the need to keep the party going all night long then there is a rumor of something ridiculous going on!  Head to Pi Lam to witness NadaStrom aka Matt Nordstrom and Dave Nada kicking out the dancefloor bangers til the sun comes up. It’s going to be so hot - peep the sick remiiiiiiiix. I hope the homeboy/FV beer dude Stephen Potter isn’t mad that I’m blowing up spots.

SUNDAY

Popped! Festival 2008 wraps up at the World Cafe Live with Daniel Johnston, The Capital Years, Tickely Feather, O’Death, Sam Champion, Takka Takka, Gildon Works, Cheers Elephant and more. 3pm. $30.

Adam & Dave’s Bloodline, New Motels, The Secret Life of Sofia and Run Runner are at the M-Room. I gotta give props to Village Green Productions, they are earning my respect! Sweet flyer, too.

There is also a wrap part of the Ladies of Hip-Hop 2008 Festival at the Bubble House (3404 Sansom Street). It’s an all ages indoor / outdoor house music event with DJ Lee Jones & DJ Hector Ramon! Free! 3:00pm-9:00pm

I can’t forget the hardcore punk house shows - Annihilation Time, Distress Signal, Gruk and Endless Bummer are playing at Planet Mollie. This weekend is going to be the death of me.

The other day we got the nicest email informing us that Sweet Jane and Tattooed Mom’s are teaming up to offer you Sweet Jane Sundays with DJ Jem. This sounds like the perfect way to cap the weekend. Tell Sweet Bobby that we said “Hi!” 10pm-2am.
