Philadelphia Weekend Picks!

March 7th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

Not a lot of rocking and/or rolling this weekend but there is plenty of killer events to shake those hips at…

FRIDAY

The M-Room offers up Hip-Hop Lives  with the bol DJ Skipmode and his rap group Electric City10pm. $7

R.E. Load’s10th Anniversary Celebration at the Mad Decent Mausoleum (go to 12th and Spring Garden and wander around, stupid) looks completely awesome. R.E. Load’s a Philly institution - a DIY bike bag company that makes some of the best courier bags in the world.  The birthday party features the Rock Tits DJs, Immediate DJs, and the Strawberry Mansion DJs. Plus, plenty of crucial and/or brutal bike punx. 9pm. $5.

For real, we’re real psyched that Andy Pry is back in Philly. His new Excess party at Medusa looks off the chain. Andy, Meg E Mitch, and DJ RMT on the decks taking you to Ibiza and back again. Peep Andy’s promo mix for the event. Free.

SATURDAY

Weirdo church Circle of Hope has Sightings, Weyes Bluhd, The W.P.O., The Electroputas, and Mincemeat or Tenspeed. All Ages. 7:45pm. $8.

Samara Lubelski and Soft People and maybe one more band at at the Chapel of the First Unitarian Church. That place is way small so don’t front - get there early. All Ages. 8pm. $10.

The Barbary has another Ten Commandments reggae and soul explosion. This time with boss sound selectors Kyle M and Action Wood. I gotta ask these guys to guest at England Belongs To Twee sometime! 10pm-2am. $5.

Yinzers rejoice, Philadelphyinz - the ever grinding Apt-One and Skinny Friedman -  are back at Medusa. They’ve got a special guest DJ and seriously deep crates (uh, hard drives?) filled with tunes to make you get loose. Check the new mixtape.  Free!

At Upstairs at the Khyber it’s the Billy Werner’s birthday version of Hip Replacement. 9pm. Free.

Finally, for you absolute late night fiends, Funkshun/Rizumu has this crazy party at the Lava Zone - Katie Simko is doing a live set, plus DJ sets by Deep C and Jamie Morris + Dissonance.  BYOB. 18+. $10. 10pm-7am.

SUNDAY

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Sunday so break out that Notre Dame Starter jacket, yo.

I’m pretty sure that our homeboys Hail Social have broken up for good. That won’t stop them from having a Remix Album Record Release Party at The Barbary. The aforementioned Andy Pry, Designer Drugs and Dances With White Girls are DJing. It’s free!

Finally, Sunday night is the goddamned last episode EVER of The Wire! I’m getting bummed out just thinking about it.
