Philadelphia Weekend Picks!

February 29th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

So like yeah…more snow forcast for tonight. Friday night is jam packed with action. Things taper off slightly after that. If you were feeling really adventurous, you could book your flight now and fly to Brussels to see Bardo Pond and Clockcleaner (among others) play the Kraak Festival. If intercontinental flight isn’t your idea of a good time, then check this other junk out…

FRIDAY

Turbostation are taking over the Troc with their ambitious 3rd party Packed In & Spaced Out. Read a weird and not entirely factual story about them here9pm-2am. Free before 11pm. $5.

Turmoil and some bands are playing the North Star Bar. I’m probably not too into the bands at this show but I love Hodges from Turmoil. 9pm. $16.

Fluid has Big Rich Medina representing AfroDisco: A New Journey Into the Afro Soul Sound. 10pm-2am. 7 bucks.

Upstairs at the Khyber has Restless Leg Syndrome with Dave T, Ryan Nation. 9pm. Free.

The Yah Mos Def record release  show with Pink Skull is at The Barbary. It seems like only yesterday when me and Poerner were DJing weird house parties together. 10pm. $5.

But, yo, my pick for Friday night (and maybe even my pick for the weekend) is The illvibe collective’s Bodyrock 7 Year Anniversary party at the M Room with special guest the legendary King Britt. Free mix cds. Ipod raffle. King Britt boxset raffle. Drink specials all night long. And some of the absolute hottest DJ’s this fine city has to offer. 9pm. $10.

SATURDAY

And Dim Sum has a new monthly at the Raven Lounge. Their first night is this Saturday and it is a Vh1 Save the Music benefit. So come dance to hip-hop/electro and help maintain the tradition of kids picking up the trumpet for a couple months in elementary school then promptly quitting after realizing how bad they are. (I see you Gordon Bombay!)

Johnny Brenda’s has Obits, Orphan, and The Failed Alliance. We already told you how hot that’s going to be. 8pm. $8/$10

Medusa Lounge has another Hurrah party. This one features special guest Mark Brown (Are We Not Men?, Baltimore) with residents Shawn Ryan & Chris Rogy and and opening set by Electrochris (NYC). Hurrah parties always have the best flyers!  10pm-2am. Free.

SUNDAY

The Black Hollies, Les Sans Culottes, and The Nooses play at The Fire on Sunday. I think that the Black Hollies are ex members of Rye Coalition and The Nooses are ex members of Ink & Dagger. Weird!  9pm. $7.

I know that I have posted on here that I’m kind of anti Nu-Silk City but Sara Sherr has her new Sing Your Life! Karaoke party there on Sunday night. I’m pro Sara. Whatever shall I do? 10pm-2am. Free.
