Philadelphia Weekend Picks!

February 22nd, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

I hate snow so much. It’s cold and miserable out.  I decided to keep it brief this weekend. I’ve only listed a few things. They are all well worth your time and money.

FRIDAY

Daniel Johnston is playing at the Troc with The Capitol Years. I think the Cap Years are going to be his backup band. The last time I saw him it was really awkward.  All Ages. 8pm. $17/$20.

The Seclusiasis crew bring their Straight Dope back Upstairs at the Khyber. I think DJ Excel from the Skratch Makaniks is their guest DJ for the evening. 9pm. Free.

Johnny Brenda’s has a pretty sick show with Atlas Sound, Valet, and White Rainbow. I’ve been digging Valet a lot lately. 9pm. $8/$10.

SATURDAY

You’ve got your always an awesome option option -  Sugartown at Tritone with Beretta 76, the Victor Victor Band, Ken, and Surgeon.  10pm.

Upstairs at the Khyber has Electronic Renaissance with DJ RMT and Oh Murder! Inc. 9pm. Free.

The Barbary has the Live Forever party with JHN RDN, Designer Drugs, and Club Lyfestile. 10pm-2am. $5.

But, yo, let’s keep it real - these next two are in a tie for the thing to do on Saturday night.

First, the people that used to run the Danger Danger house have a new Danger Danger gallery space located at 5013 Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia. Their opening party doubles as a record release party for the new Make A Rising album. The opening reception is from 6:00pm - 8:00pm featuring live music by :

  • Planet Y (Public Guilt Recs- Yanni Popodopilus & Charles Cohen)
  • Blipvert (CA)
  • Little Ocean

Visual Art by:

  • Russell Brodie
  • John Emory
  • Alex Mantray
  • Kevin McCabe
  • Kimberly Passadomo
  • Roman Salsic
  • Hunter Stabler
  • Nate Wilson (Maryland College of Art 2003-4)

Followed by the Make A Rising record release party from 9:00pm-12:30pm featuring:

  • Br’er
  • Make your own maps (San Antonio, TX)
  • Nat Baldwin (from the Dirty Projectors)
  • Make A Rising

Both events are all ages
Free before 8pm. $5 after!

And, finally, Bleached Black are back at Medusa with special guest DJ Apt One and, uh, FREE PIZZA. You can’t front on free slices.

 SUNDAY

On Sunday you could go see a noise show at the Marvelous Records (208 s. 40th street) with Vvltvre from Providence RI (the land of crazy stateside noise!), Embarker and Rawar. 7pm. donation.

Or you could go to Silk City to peep the video premier of Focus Skateboard magazine’s Rise and Shine video.

Or you could head to the First Unitarian Church for a good old fashioned punk show with The Loved Ones, The Gaslight Anthem, The Ergs, and Amateur Party. All Ages. 7:30. $10/$12.
