Dogs and Bunnies Galore!

February 5th, 2008 by natalie · No Comments

Looking for some bully love? Intrigued by the phenomenon that is litter-trained bunnies? This is the February installment of the monthly spot on FV that will feature some of the bestest and most urgent animals available for foster care and adoption at the PAWS shelter in Philly… The City of Brotherly Love is home to one of the largest, most overcrowded animal shelters in the whole US… Each year PAWS takes in about 30,000 animals- everything from dogs and cats, to reptiles, bunnies, birds and rodents. Yea, that’s a helluva lotta animals to sort through, so let FV let you in on the cream of the crop… Ashes!

Ashes is a “medically urgent” currently at the shelter that needs out ASAP! Ashes is a beautiful young Pit-Shepherd-Kitchen Sink-Heinz 57 dog that has come down with pneumonia and needs to leave the shelter and go into foster care so that she can recover. Ashes is a perfect “ambassador” of the great qualities of mutts and bully breeds- she is people lovin’, dog lovin’, seems fine with cats and is all around sweet, affectionate, playful and goofy. Despite her great personality she is feeling really down in the dumps and sick and must leave the shelter soon in order to survive. Unfortunately, Ashes is proving hard to place in fostercare because she must go to a home with no other dogs, as she is highly contagious until she recovers.

Scarlett!

Scarlett is an awesome dog currently in foster care but in desperate need of a forever home! Scarlett is a formerly “medically-urgent” dog that was found at a 711 in West Philly thought to be pregnant because of her big belly. Due to her emaciation the shelter vets decided to perform an emergency spay surgery on Scarlett, only to find that she wasn’t pregnant- in fact her bloating was due to a massive infection of the uterus. She also had an upper respiratory infection and has two damaged teeth that are being pulled soon. Despite her rough start in life, Scarlett is an AMAZING dog. She is competely housebroken and crate trained, knows “sit”, “stay”, “come” and “drop it”. Scarlett has a low to moderate energy level, and mostly likes to carry her squeaky “squirrely” toy around and chase bouncy kongs. Scarlett doesn’t jump on or get on furniture. She loves kisses and belly rubs. Unfortunately, this amazing dog is proving hard to place because she is not a fan of cats, and would prefer to be an only dog.

Bunnies!

Tonight at the shelter we recieved 16 (yea… sixteen!) bunnies (in addition to 50 roosters, damn it was a hectic night!). These bunnies need foster or forever homes ASAP, as bunnies can stress easily in the loud, cold shelter. Several of the bunnies seem to be in great shape already, but many, including some babies are suffering from malnutrition, starvation, and stunted growth. Bunines make GREAT pets, especially for kids who like soft things to pet but not a ton of repsonsibility! Bunnies are social and smart, and can are very easy to litter train.

If you are able to foster or adopt ANY of the animals featured this month on Fun Vampires, please get in touch! Information on specific animals and fostering in general can be got by emailing me at: NatalieSmith33@yahoo.com
