Philadelphia Weekend Picks

Oh my god. This week has been absolutely grueling. I just want to sleep but the excellent events…they are calling me.

FRIDAY

The North Star has a pretty decent local band showcase featuring The Cobbs, Jotto, Papertrigger, and The Greyhounds. It’s kinda hype that you can buy the Jotto record from Turntablelab. 9pm. $8. 21+.

Similarly, the Khyber had a solid local line up with Brass, Metroplex, Cordova, and Engine We’re A Forest. This is a CD release show for Brass. One of the dudes in Brass works for Wawa Corporate so thow a shorti at him or something. Check it - the PW wrote about them this week.

Pi Lam (3914 Spruce Street) is having a prom!  Wildout to the excellent noises of Pony Pants, The Subjects, Farcial Hoodwink, The Assistant Principals and, this just in…Hermit Thrushes are taking the place of Cinemasophia on this show so don’t listen to what that crazy flyer tells you, dude. 9pm. $5. 21+ (wink, wink)

Weird out at Johnny Brenda’s with Growing, I.U.D., and Steve Moore of Zombi. 9pm. $10. 21+.

and, finally, Fluid has Chicago house music legend Derrick Carter, with Lee Jones, and DJ Dirty. It’s not every day that a legend stops by - pay your respects. 9pm. $10. 21+.

SATURDAY

For seven years, Sara Sherr and friends have been bringing the Ladyrock to Philly. For that, Sara, I tip my hat to you and offer a happy birthday to Sugar Town. Celebrate for yourself at Tritone for  the Sugar Town Anniversary Show with The Shondes, Santa Marias (ex Friggs! yes!), Cynthia G. Mason, DJ M.J. Fine. 9pm. $7. 21+.

The Khyber has an off the chain show - Six Organs of Admittance, Randall of Nazareth, The Intergalactic Incense Burners, and the Creeping Weeds. The Randall Of Nazo record is a killer. Here’s a song for ya. 9pm. $10. 21+.

Upstairs at the Khyber brings what I think is the 2nd installment of Electronic Renaissance! The Oh Murder Inc DJ’s and friends bring you visionary electro, cosmic disco, rap anthems, heavy beats and sweeping arpeggios (and maybe some Pop songs from Herbie?) Be there to find out. 9pm. free! 21+.

Bleached Black returns to Medusa Lounge with special out of town guest DJs Love Fingers & Ron Morelli. Ron was one of the guys responsible for the super sick Paradise At Key West (R.I.P.) night. Mad people are jocking his steez now. This will rule. Free.

SUNDAY

Oh dude!  This is a show that I’m really looking forward to - Tyvek, Brother JT, and Eat Forever and Queen Sheba II (4211 Baltimore Avenue). Every band at this show is great.  I’m so psyched! 8:30pm. $5.
