I Feel Like Jerry Lewis In France

When I was in high school my friend Andy’s dad used to tease us about being punk rockers. Unlike getting made fun of by our own parents, this ribbing was OK by us because Andy’s dad was Ben Vaughn and Ben Vaughn already knew about being a punk rocker. He was one - way back in the day he played drums in The Sickidz, an early Philly punk band. He knew about all kinds of music and he would sometimes hip us to certain bands. I’m almost certain that he introduced us to Hasil Adkins, Ween, The Ventures and some other bands. His car, a Nash Rambler, is the car stolen from the Cherry Hill Mall at the end of the Dead Milkmen Punk Rock Girl video. (He loves Nash Ramblers so much that he recorded an entire album in one.) He used to put us on the guest list and make sure we got in (underage style) at shows of his and the all female garage rock band The Friggs. In short, he was a cool dad. Here’s a great song off of his 1986 record Beautiful Thing.

For what it’s worth, thanks for teasing us Mr. Vaughn.
