The Philadelphia Inquirer, in an article that could have been ripped from a punk rock fanzine circa 1992, asks: Can meat-eaters and vegetarians get along?
“This is the time of year we place a cooked brown carcass on the table, then reach inside its body cavity and scoop out powerfully odoriferous items that people are expected to eat.
A herbivore on a holiday built around a celebrated, sturdy piece of poultry can feel a little out of step.”
I’m happy they are asking the tough questions over there because it gives me the perfect opportunity to run this Youth Of Today “No More” video! I hope the next article they run is about how bad smoking and drinking is for you or a reprint of a PETA flyer about factory farming.
In case you’re feeling out of step this Thanksgiving, we’ve got a vegan recipe for you…
(recipe stolen from Fun Vampire homegirl Roxy)
Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie
1 12oz block of mori-nu extra firm SILKEN tofu
1 16oz bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips (ghiardelli are vegan, lots of store brands are too, whole foods has a vegan type)
2/3 cup of creamy peanut butter
vanilla soy milk
pinch of salt
pie crust (make your own or get a graham cracker one)
chocolate chips/peanuts (optional)
melt the chocolate in a double boiler and let it cook. put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. add vanilla soy milk until it’s smooth and creamy, like pudding. pour into the pie crust. sprinkle chocolate chips and/or peanuts on top if you want. chill for at least 2 hours.
Sez Roxy: I PROMISE that it doesn’t taste like tofu at all. I normally hate desserts made with tofu and the peanut butter and chocolate totally mask it !
