Mike McKee is like the Punk Rock Mayor of Philadelphia! He’s in a bazillion bands, DJs at England Belongs To Twee, is a freelance writer, etc etc etc. Pretty much he’s one of the All Time Best Philly Punx. Tonight he is kicking off a new event called Punk Rock Movie Night at the First Unitarian Church.
Check it - a little while ago, Mike and I were about to DJ at England Belongs To Twee when we started talking about how sad it was that Lance Hahn was in a coma and that we wished that there was some way that we could help since we were both fans of the man and his bands / writing / record label.
That night we talked to the bartenders and they let us set up a jar and collect money for Lance. It was only one night and we hadn’t planned it and we raised almost fifty bucks. That’s not much when you are facing a mountain of medical debt but every little bit helps, right?
Sadly, early the next morning we both got word that Lance had passed away.
In order to help offset some funeral costs and mounting debt - Mike decided to set up Punk Rock Movie Night. For the first event, McKee has lined up two great “punk” movies:
The 1984 Penelope Spheeris cult-classic Suburbia - in which a gang of suburban punx run wild on the streets and feel all rejected
and Beyond The Screams - a U.S. Latino hardcore punk documentary directed by Martin Sorrondeguy of Los Crudos / XlimpwristX fame
plus, some live band footage in between the screenings. Even the Philly Weekly liked the idea - so cook up some vegan popcorn head on over the the U.Church - it’s for a good cause, yo.
