Philadelphia Weekend Picks!

October 19th, 2007 by Labuda · 1 Comment

Christ! I thought that last Friday was out of control but this Friday night may be even wilder - and the weekend just gets better and better after that.

FRIDAY

OK, my dilemma for the weekend is what show is better: Jesu and Torche at the First Unitarian Church All Ages. 8pm. $13

OR

No Age, Red Rocket and Soiled Mattress & The Springs at Johnny Brenda’s 9pm. $8. 21+

I think it’s a really really tough call. One one hand - Justin Broadrick is like a god!  He was in Napalm Death! I’ve loved every Jesu record but I’ve heard (crazy heavy shoegaze action) that Jesu are kinda boring live (and I can see that being the case).

On the other - No Age have put out a great album and their show will probably be more “fun” or whatever but the show isn’t all ages and that suuuuuuucks.

Making Time is back once again this week at Pure Nightclub
(1221 St. James Street - between Walnut and Locust and 12th and 13th Streets) with the usual suspects plus Erol Aikan (London!) and New Young Pony Club (London) and Sorceress (NYC). Free PBR and/or Red Bull & vodka from 9-11. This event is FREE if you went to last weeks MT but costs 10 bones if you didn’t. 9pm-3:30am. Get radical.

For real, for real, this looks so cool!  I Make Monsters presents the Mr. Lertchman toy release party at Jinxed Clothing (620 S. 4th Street) with handmade plush toys and a monster art show with some great local artists. Plus free booze and cupcakes!

After that, head Upstairs at the Khyb for the official afterparty jumpoff edition of…

Spin The Bottle. It’s always Upstairs at the Khyber.  It’s always free. It’s got great drink specials (Dollar PBR and High Life Until 11 $2.50 Steaz soda/Steaz energy and Vodka all night) and great DJs annnnnnnnd, it’s always top notch fun. Act just like you know. 21+ 9pm-2am

and finally, since I’m feelin’ nice - here’s some crap I wouldn’t go to but I bet some people would: Smashing Pumpkins and Explosions In The Sky are at the Tower. Once I bought fake tickets to see the Pumpkinz play at the Troc. Spoon and The Ponys are at the Electric Factory. I’ve never heard Spoon but I think they are like generic indie rock. The Pony’s are like mostly boring/kinda good garage rock. Imperial Teen are at the North Star - that band is good but has a member that used to be in Faith No More aka one of the worst bands ever. And, of course, Kanye with Akon, Rihanna Ne-Yo, Eve, Swizzy, Cassidy and Soulja Boy at at the Wachovia Center for Powerhouse.  Crank dat.

CATURDAY

England Belongs To Twee is Upstairs at the Khyber with the special Boos and Braces halloween edition.

That is me and Mike McKee’s event. It totally rules and is super drunken fun. It is possibly the only DJ night in the city where one of the hosts did a flip off the dj booth and into the crowd. If you like pop music and/or punk rock music then you know the score. If you don’t then keep posing hard. It’s a lot like this but with more pop and less Leatherface actually playing live. Free!

Castanets and Birdie Busch are at Johnny Brendas. 9pm. $10.

Oh man!  I didn’t even know that Swedish doom metal killers Witchcraft were touring and here they are playing in my neighborhood with Saviors at the North Star Bar. This show will be Sabbath heavy and totally sick.

Simplefly and Paperstreet are doing it big at Transit with MSTRKRFT + Steven Bloodbath, Shaun Ryan, WTWB! and Jokers of the Scene (from Canaduh)  Get on the list, yo.

Whoa! A show at the Church Of Divine Energy (on the corner of 48th. & Woodland)! I haven’t been to this warehouse spot in a minute - witness the musical stylings of NORTHERN LIBERTIES (’Ghost Mind Electricity’ record release) and PONY PANTS (record release show for their new EP) and KAT KLIX (record release for 50 + song album) and PRE and (dude!) MONOTONIX.  I don’t know how much it is but it’s warehouse jawn so it’ll probably be reasonable and all ages.

Get your late night fix when Boombastics and Illvibe Collective present The Duplex at theArts Garage (1520 Parrish St)

SUNDAY

Justice are at the Troc but it’s sold out. You snoozed and you lose.

The new American Steel record is deece. They are playing the North Star with some crappy “punk” bands.

To end all this mess - wish someone a happy birthday because it’s Dev79’s bday party at Inciting HQ with Vex’d from the UK doin’ a live set like what.  Don’t sleep.
