I’ll take Villanova Punx for $800, Alex

Jeopardy is probably my favorite TV show. Last night while watching the show I was amused to note that one of the contestants was sporting the early to mid 90’s emo/indierocker look. She had on these cat eye glasses and she looked like, well, she looked like she’d just gotten back from the More Than Music festival circa 1994 and was going to write a zine about it.

When Alex Trebek interviewed each contestant (easily the most embarrassing part of each show) the contestant, whose name was Ann, mentioned that she liked punk rock and that she enjoyed travelling to at least one punk festival a year. The cynic in me was like “Cool, you like the Warped Tour” but I was secretly hoping that she meant Chaos In Tejas or something. Alex asked her what her favorite band was and she replied “Fugazi because they are putting the DC in hardcore.” That’s kind of a cringeworthy answer because these days I don’t think Fugazi are putting the anything in anywhere (I think that they are effectively broken up) and I don’t know if I’d really consider Fugazi a hardcore band but whatever. Maybe the producers on the show put her up to it…Check out her profile on the Jeopardy site - complete with an audio shout out to the District of Columbia.

In any case, I was drawn to root for this Ann character because I felt like she looked vaguely familiar in that “every punk/hardcore kid looks like some punk/hardcore kid that you know” kinda way and (Attn: Cabbage Collective: allow me to be sexist for a second) she was way cute in that 90’s emo / indierocker steez kinda way. Little did i know that I actually DID know her!

My homeboy Tom checked it out and Jeopardy contestant Ann is Ann Gavaghan who used to go to Villanova. I wasn’t great friends with her but I remember seeing her at Stalag13 shows and she and some friends came to a lot of shows that I did at La Salle. In fact, I have this ill pic of I took of her and her video camera at a Shotmaker show on the La Salle campus. In the pic she has bright blue hair. Oh the 90’s!

I remember being intrigued and impressed because it was hard enough being a punk rocker weirdo at La Salle. It must have been murder at Vanillanova. I could be wrong but I think that she even ran for Class President of ‘Nova. That’s hardcore for the hardcore, people.

According to this website, She’s done some pretty impressive things since leaving the Philly area. It looks like Ann is now a legislative aide for Hilary Clinton.

And the coolest thing is that SHE WON last night so she’ll be on again tonight. I’ll be rooting for her.

09/21 Friday Morning Update: Ms. Ann Gavaghan did not win last night.
