Nutter is fighting Street on police promotions which is a good thing. What the city of Philadelphia needs is some lame duck appointments by a lame duck mayor in the protection and freedom in our city. With 225 promotions up in the air, at street level supervision, Street says now, Nutter says wait. The problem is that Johnson, the current police commissioner who is going to lose his job once Street gets elected, said he could have done the promotions but waited until after June when 320 new recruits joined the Philadelphia police department.
I have some numbers given by Sly Johnson about all this promotions business and if it really makes any sense:
- 6,681 officers, currently has 522 fewer officers today than 2003
- 533 detectives, down from 612 in 2003
- 516 sergeants, down from 605
- 238 lieutenants, down from 287
- 89 captains, down from 122
Finally Johnson goes on record saying this, “These are reasonable promotions, they’re fair promotions, and these people shouldn’t be subject to politics.” Hmm I smell something fishy here
