You might ask, what is cyclocross? Cyclocross simply defined is a cross between road biking and mountain biking done during the winter. What that means is riders use a modified road bike with bigger tires for mud clearance and other forest debris that could get stuck. The whole premise is that races last no longer than a few hours but its not a distance thing.
Here is a great video explaining it
The race is centered around a well thought out course thats about one and a half miles. In the course, there are certain barriers that riders actually have to get off their bikes and hop over. There are other things on the course where in fact will be too muddy to navigate a bike over and the rider will have to get off.
Over in Europe especially Belgium and northern France, where in the fall and winter it is absolutely miserable weather-wise. Its constantly in the 40’s F and raining. The courses are perfect for crashes since they are so muddy. Over in Europe though the sport is HUGE. Fans line up really early in the morning and get super wasted and freeze their balls off to watch about an hour and a half of racing. Talk about die hard. The good news is that cyclocross’ popularity is picking up here in the States and in the philly area there are tons of races.
