Top 5 Songs From My Catholic Childhood

through him with him in him, in the unity of the holy sprit
This past Sunday I attended Mass with my parents for the first time in a few years. Not much has changed. Actually, nothing has. Still saying the same prayers, still singing the same songs I couldn’t beleive I still remembered the words. Catholic music being bad is kind of a cultural cliche’. Other religions have much better liturgical music but I grew up Catholic, so I had these. I realize now that some of these songs are not exclusively Roman Catholic but here we go: MY TOP 5 CATHOLIC SONGS!
5. “Let There be Peace On Earth”
4. “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”
3. “Be Not Afraid”
2. “Here I Am, Lord”
1. “On Eagles’ Wings”

Let me just note that I may be biased on my number one pick. I was a pall bearer for my grandfather at his funeral and “On Eagles Wings” was the song being sung as we carried him out. Not a dry eye in the house. not one.

…and He will raise you up on eagles wings
Bear you on the breathe of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
and hold you in the palm of His hand.

fly high grandpa

as we’ve both commented before… “eagles wings” makes every mom cry. because every funeral features this hit.
it was already stuck in my head today as i knew you were making this post.

apparently it was a big hit among the 9/11 victims’ families

catholic songs need more than a top 5. you have done a disservice to jesus.

just off the top of my head, these classics:

    anthem
glory and praise to our god
    bless be the lord

i remember on friday mass if the liturgical music lady would say “the closing hymn is bless be the lord” there would be a riot of 1-8th graders reaching for their glory and praise books.

well these were my top 5! i don’t know anthem. but the other 2 are pretty up beat jammers if i remember correctly, aren’t they? good picks.

good job sam! i can’t believe i forgot bless be the lord and glory and praise… still a little sad ‘one bread one body’ isn’t on there, but i think you nailed the top 5. it’s been a few hours and i can’t get any of these songs out of my head. good work.

    ps
how come there aren’t more catholic hippies? i think all that singing about peace and eagles and shit made me the flowerchild i am today….

probably the catholic anti-homosexual stance has something to do with it.

there does seem to be a fair number of jewish hippies though. i remember i was in New Paltz, NY once, which is a quasi-hippie town, and in this shop they were selling “Jah Candles handcrafted by Saul Rosenberg”.
