Why do some stay dry while others feel the pain? What makes you turn your head the other way? What raises your neighborhood insurance rates? Why does the bell curve blame the baby’s DNA? Chocolate Rain of course. If you have not heard of Tay Zonday and his song Chocolate Rain, I gotta ask what internet rock you’ve been hiding under, he’s only got one of the most viewed videos on Youtube. So maybe you’ve got better things to do than keep up with the latest videos ciculating the web. Don’t worry, I’ll get you up to speed.
Tay Zonday is a 25 (surprised?) year old grad student who has about a half dozen songs available on youtube and myspace with titles like Internet Dreams and Demons on the Dance Floor but it seems the social commentary of Chocolate Rain has particularly resonated with the Dramatic Chipmunk loving set.
Like any good internet phenom of the moment Chocolate Rain has inspired all the requisite parodies, A chopped and screwed remix, an 8bit Megaman remix , a couple of racial twists on the theme (Vanilla Snow and Yellow Piss respectively) and scores of immitators covering the hit (McGruff the crime dog not the least of them).
In spite of death threats, Tay is certainly making the best of his 15 minutes of fame check out his spot on this Mcdonald’s commerical.
