the rentals, spaceland: it’s all about sara

if you missed them the first time around, well, they’re back. post-pinkerton, matt sharp left weezer (bass) to concentrate on his rentals side project full time.

well, he has reassembled the band, albeit with only one of the original members and they just played a saturday night residency at spaceland in LA, and i caught the last of four shows. and let me just tell you: it was flipping awesome. most importantly though, he picked up a new multi-instrumentalist named sara radle, and she is the cutest thing ever.

i get it though…this blog is turning pathetic. yesterday we’ve got s. frank talking about how he is in love with fiona, and now i’m talking about this chick from the rentals…and let me tell you: we aren’t emo high school kids. we are 29 years old and we still have these ridiculous crushes on music chicks–we are total homos, no homo–and i wouldn’t want it any other way. if this is turning into maxim for pathetic introspective aging punk rockers so be it.

she plays guitar (with great rocking stage presence). she plays keyboards. she does the harmonizing and sings like an angel. she bounces around stage and it was hard for me to pay attention to anything else during the show.

back to the show: if you liked the first record, and were “eh…” about the second, and don’t want to see a full set of new material w/ a couple bones thrown out there, then go out and see them immediately.

they pretty much did all rocking songs from the first album: waiting, friends of p, sweetness and tenderness, naive, please let that be you–and then closed the encore with their best song ever: THESE DAYS. i wanted to jump on stage and squeeze all of them when they played it.

announcement: “this is our last song.” matt puts mic to face, so i know that it’s gotta be a song w/o instrumental intro. i get ready to flip out. drummer counts off, my fist goes into the air as matt goes, “these days! i may not be so simple. after all!”

they might’ve played move on and brilliant boy, can’t remember. did not play my summer girl. from second record played: the cruise, getting by, barcelona, and the man with two brains. [snooze].

huge awesome surprise, they played weezer b-side: i just threw out the love of my dreams sung by rachel.

sara radle. from dallas. just moved to LA to be in the rentals. completely cute and awesome. has a dimple on he right cheek when she sings.

a song from her solo stuff:

don’t get me wrong. i still love rachel, who was awesome, has great stage presence, and is still super cute.

the band brought loads of energy, even the dudes. but i gotta say, matt sharp, you are like the hugh hefner of indie rock. props.

rentals alumni:

cherie. (peep this interview where she disses matt and the rentals.

maya rudolph

things i learned at the show:

1. matt drives a bmw–weezer money.
2. rachel drives a scion–gigging money, that dog money, plus maybe she gets money from daddy.
3. sara drives a hyundai.
4. if your first record came out in 1995, second in 1999, and you haven’t put out anything since, then your crowd will be old and probably kind of nerdy and ugly.
