First we posted about all the delicious new vegan options being offered at this years Phillies games, Then S.Agnew complained that the new vegan options didn’t exist and Hans went to a game to investigate.
Frankly, the whole thing just made me sad. I don’t care about baseball that much. It’s as exciting as watching paint dry. I do, however, care about going out to a ballgame and taking the whole thing in. And, I care a lot about FOOD!
With that in mind, I went to the game on 04/28.
I think that I am a jinx because the Phils were kind of ona bit of a win streak and then I head to a game and they get destroyed. But, who cares about baseball…we’re talkin’ food here.
During the 4th inning, No Quarter Records mogul Mike Quinn and I ventured down from our almost nose-bleedy seats in search of vegan chow. We located some vegan hot dogs and purchased a gang of them. Plus, I got a real hot dog for Pie.
The vegan hot dogs were pretty good and we both ate three of them.
Later, after some kinda gross, barely warm, way over-priced french fries and soft pretzels and beers I decided that I NEEDED to locate Rick’s Steaks to see if they were selling vegan cheesesteaks. At about the same time that I came to this realization, Pie and Mike decided that the game was pretty much unwinnable so we all decided to leave.
I was undeterred in my quest for gnarly ballpark vegan fast food and we found the kiosk for Rick’s Steaks and Pie ordered me a vegan jawn while Quinn headed over to get crab fries.
Pie reported that the cheesesteak master working the grill told her that they serve about 30 to 40 vegan steaks a game. She also told me that the “steak” was in some individually sealed kidney shaped vacuum sealed pouch that they cut open and spill out onto the grill…so, each vegan steak is individually wrapped for your protection.
I gotta be honest, it was incredibly greasy. But, whatever, man…this was gross fast food at a ball game and I wasn’t out for a salad. Even with all the grease, I have to say that IT WAS GOOD! The fake meat was deece. The cheez was good (but, maybe NOT vegan…I didn’t watch the thing get made and I’m not vegan so I didn’t care that much). I’m psyched to go back and I’d buy one again.
FINAL DAMAGE:
Labuda - 3 vegan dogs, 1 vegan steak, 1 cup of fries, 1 cup of crab fries, 1 beer, soda.
Pie - 2 real hot dogs, a few sips of my beer, some of my crab fries, a soda.
Mike - 3 vegan dogs, 1 beer, 1 soft pretzel, 1 bucket of crab fries.
So, yeah, vegan steaks do exist at the ballpark now. Go Phils!
