England Belongs To Twee!

April 18th, 2007 by Labuda · 6 Comments

Hey, is it tacky to promote your own event on a blog you help run and write dumb stuff for? We say “Hell to tha no!” and this Saturday night, me and Mike McKee are doing our monthly England Belongs To Twee night at The Khyber. What’s that, you say? Read on, maaaaaaaaan.

OK, a lot of people do not know this but England Belongs To Twee is a JOKE!

Yep, it started out as a joke between Mike and I. We are both honest fans of Oi! punk and jangly indie-pop and we discussed a night of listening to the toughest music and the cutest music at the same time. We never actually thought that anyone would agree with our taste -  let along book us.

Alas, Stacie George overheard the conversation and thought it would be fun/funny so she set it up for us. We thought we’d last one night and then The Khyber staff would get bored of our dumb joke and fire us.

But, the kids will have their say! and, they did. A lot of kids actually showed up each month. Even more surprising is that a lot of kids DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY! For real, it warms my heart to see twee indie kittens and burly skinheads dancing it up.

We urge you to come out on Saturday night for Philadelphia’s only monthly dance/DJ night devoted to Oi!, early British punk and indie pop/garage/C86/”twee.” So, there’s something for meatheads and milksops alike.

Expect to hear exactly what you’d expect to hear. that is: a bit of Sham 69, a bit of Heavenly, a smattering of sarah records recording artists, some Vanilla Muffins, a Cock Sparrer song or two. Perhaps some St. Etienne. You might even hear some brit-pop or some proto-oi! glam or pub rock. And, every so often I bust out a set of soul or a set of reggae, ya never know. A few chords, a catchy chorus, that’s all that it takes to be a legend. you get the idea. Calvin Johnson is innocent, OK!

Don’t worry, if you can’t make it this Saturday night you can come out next time. We do it every 3rd Saturday of the month and we’ve got some great guest DJ’s and other tricks up our sleeves coming up.
