Once a year, beer connoisseurs gather in Munster, Indiana to welcome and get their hands on Three Floyd’s Brewing Company’s DarkLord. The critically acclaimed Russian Imperial Stout comes out in extremely limited quantities (the Tribune reported only 225 cases were brewed last year). Once the brew hits your local beer-snob joint, libation of the DL is a flash in a pan—assuming patrons can get their hands on the stuff.
Which is why after last year’s release, we buckled up to the bar of The Map Room, drinking as much as we can. This only lasted a couple of days before they ran out. But the Restocking approaches.
The festival starts at noon and lasts until midnight. Three Floyd’s will have a menu of BBQ brisket, BBQ pork, and smoked house made sausages while selling 22 oz. bottles of Dreadnaught and DarkLord.
DarkLord will be sold cash only with a 6 bottles per person limit.
It’s also a time for those at Beer Advocate and Rate Beer to come with their collection of rare brews and hold a swap meet. It’s kind of like nerds trading baseball cards, but drunk.
Oh and there’s a pretty unusual lineup of bands: Dreadnok Ripper, Imperial Battle Snake, and Bible of the Devil.
As for the actual Darklord taste, my palate notices dark mocha dipped in bourbon with a subtle fruit acidity that finishes out the aftertaste. It’s some dense and heavy stuff, guaranteed to take one down upon finishing the bottle—due to its supreme richness, not the 13% alcohol content.

If Darklord and the Victory HopDevil were to engage in an epic battle who do you think will come out victorious? I am putting my money on Darklord. He looks real serious!
