Philly:Weekend Picks!

March 30th, 2007 by Labuda · No Comments

What are you gonna do this weekend? The weather should be nice and spring-like and you should be prepared to go out and have a good time. The Fun Vampires have your back.

Honestly, I really don’t think that there is too too much going on this weekend. Depending on your feelings about going out, this could be a good or bad thing.

FRIDAY:

Friday seems like it’s going to be an epic battle between the tried-and-true MAKING TIME (Pure nightclub) with guests The Presets, Data Rock and Lo-Fi-Fnk plus Dave P, Dave Pak, Mike Z, the Rocktits DJ’s, Julian S.Process (508 House, holla!), Adam Sparkles, and probably JDH too. And, the Broadzilla DJ’s will be opening up on the mezzanine. . Free PBR and Sparks from 9pm-11pm. $10 to get in.

VS.

NOBODY’S DIRTY BUSINESS is presented by the Westwax Collective. It is at the unfortunately named PhilaFunkLive (8 N. Preston St) and is $5 to get in. The DJ’s are: Kyle Miller (Bleached Black), Apt One (Philadelphyinz), Stepchild (Paradise), Kenny Raw (Tech Support), Operant77 (Paradise), Propergander (Tech Support), Andrew Gaspar (Bleached Black), Sebastian Petsu (WestWax), JJC (WestWax), HonkeyLips (WestWax). I think that it might be BYOB so grab a 40 or something.

VS.

But, yo, if you are into the DIY hardcore scene (Dear HeartattaCk, …) then skip both of these events and head to the kinda weirdo Circle Of Hope (1125 S. Broad Street) for a great show featuring:

THE ONE AM RADIO (beautiful, dark, yet hopeful soundscapes. playing with a full band. myspace.)
MT. EREBUS (new band with most of the now defunct Belegost. possibly playing a new song?)
IN FIRST PERSON (crushing and cathartic. myspace.)
PROBLEMS (katy otto & friends from dc. first show! myspace.)

SATURDAY:

I’m going to a picnic but I still have some picks for youse.

First, I wanna big up the dude Manny and tell you all that you should check out a photography show that he is a part of. It’s at the Central Library. Here’s a flyer with a photo of Jason. Jason rules!

TASTY TREATS at Fluid with ?uestlove (of The Roots, who i think are playing the Tower on the night before) & Mike Nyce playing classic material all night long. Ladies free til 11pm. $7.

Heavy psyche is going down at Johnny Brenda’s when Japan’s GREEN MILK FROM THE PLANET ORANGE and Philly’s BIRDS OF MAYA burn all night long. Plus, Rocktits DJs Nez & Russ, Harsh Mellow DJs Ben & Jason and
Lights and Projections by Spendor Solis. $10 bucks gets you in, maaaaan. This show is going to be great! Jason K. (aka SoMo!) screened a really great poster for this show. Also, good heckles are “Nerds of Maya!” and Birds of GAY-ah!”

And, finally, Joseph A. Gervasi (he of Exhumed Films, NLAFz, Cabage Collective, getting banned from an anarchist bookstore, Diabolik DVD etc) & The International House present: Lance Weiler’s HEAD TRAUMA movie project! This sounds AMAZING.

Cursed the Head Trauma Music Project is a night of terror, music and side show freakish fun. As the critically acclaimed Head Trauma (Best feature 2006 Rue Morgue magazine and multiple top 10 lists) unspools on screen, join us for a live alternate soundtrack / theatrical experience. With performances by Bardo Pond, Greg Weeks (Espers, The Valerie Project), Brian McTear and Amy Morrissey (Bitter Bitter Weeks and the Novenas), Dj Chief Wreck’em and some very special surprise guests.

It’s $14 and it starts at 7:30. I am pretty sure that the address is 3701 Chestnut Street. Diabolik will be selling DVD’s before and after the event.

What the critics are saying about Head Trauma:
“A waking nightmare…one of this year’s most ambitious films” - Rue Morgue
“Genuinely creepy…immerses you right from the beginning” - Creature Corner
“A creepy, disturbing thriller” - Dread Central
“The growling, hooded figure which dogs George through the story is an absolutely terrifying apparition…the most haunting monster to grace a movie screen since the debut of Freddy Krueger in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street” - Bloody Disgusting
“Any number of big-deal filmmakers - M. Night Shyamalan, for one - would be well-served by a viewing of the low-budget Head Trauma. …this simple and effective psycho-thriller creates a mood of dread and dissociation, and sustains it, without resorting to elaborate special effects, or a colorful crowd of actors, or otherworldly mystical hooey.” 3 out of 4 stars - Philadelphia Inquirer

SUNDAY: HELLA are playing the U.Church with some other bands. I don’t like that band that much but it’s something to do. $10. All Ages.
