Last year, the Phillies organization started offering veggie dogs at certain concession stands at Citizens Bank Park. This year, the Phils seem to be taking it even further. It all begs the question ‘Is the Phanatic vegan?’
Sometime last year I heard that the stadium was selling veggie dogs along with regular hot dog’s at ballgames. I was pretty psyched. Let’s be honest, what’s a baseball game without a hot dog and a beer?
I had heard mixed results on the elusive veggie dogs. Some people claimed that they weren’t actually selling them…just telling people that they were selling them. I think that our man Hans attended a Dollar-Dog-Nite game and was told that we veggie dogs were not covered under the dollar dog sale! Being the ultimate fun vampire, he wrote a letter to the Phillies organization voicing his concern about animal loving baseball fans getting cheated out of their hard earned money. The Phils wrote back promising to rectify the situation.
It seemed to have worked. A month or so after the game that Hans attended I decided to go to a Dollar-Dog-Nite game and check it out. Pie, No Quarter Records mogul Mike Quinn and I were delighted to discover that the veggie dogs were, in fact, one dollar each! While I was stocking up, a helpful concession stand clerk warned me “You know those aren’t real meat, dontcha, hon?”
Uh, I did know that, thanks! In fact, I proceeded to eat about ten bucks worth of soy dog goodness. Pie swore that she also saw veggie burgers for sale, too.
Anyway, this year proves to be even more vegetarian friendly. The Phils send out a press release on Tuesday touting new healthier foods and steps they’ve taken to make the park more environmentally friendly.
According to the press release, they will now offer:
- New biodegradable products! Citizens Bank Park has introduced a variety of renewable resource products including cups, plates, utensils and serving pieces, in various locations throughout the ballpark.
- Cutting-edge vegetarian options include new veggie cheesesteaks at Rick’s Steaks (Ashburn Alley) and a “Vendura” vegetarian wrap/hoagie with roasted eggplant, broccoli rabe, roasted red peppers, and sharp provolone at Planet Hoagie (Ashburn Alley).
- Citizens Bank Park continues to use trans-fat free fryer oil.
[Editor’s note: Hans will be attending the business person’s special game on April 5th against the Braves. A full review will of these promised concessions will be reported]

pretty rad, but I’ll still take a good team (the Mets) and crap veg options over a crap team (the Phillies) and good food. just sayin’.

whatever man. who’s fun to watch on the mets? two things you don’t and will never have. Ryan Howard & the Philly Phanatic.

you usually hear jose reyes’ name appearing in the same sentence as the words “most exciting player in baseball”, not ryan howard. there’s plenty of sluggers in baseball (travis hafner is just as good or better than howard), but there is only ONE jose bernabe reyes. no player as exciting and multi-dimensional. also, mr. met is way more popular than the phanatic (see the ESPN commercials) and doesn’t come off halfway as dumb.

When your team hasn’t gone to the playoffs in 14 years we’ll see how psyched you are.

good point. i would like the phillies to be good, i really would. geographically the mets and phils should have a good rivalry, but it has never materialized.

opening day in 99, kids beat the shit out of some mets fans and sent them tumbling down the stairs up 700 level. it turned into a brawl

NO SUCH THING AS A VEGGIE STEAK THERE - THE PHILLIES ARE LIARS

i was at the game in the afternoon and waited in line at the steak place for 45 minutes, as there was a veggie steak indeed listed on the menu.
what i got was mushrooms, onions, and peppers on a bun. no fake steak/steak substitute at all. and the veggies were on the same grill as the meat. and they were served with the same spatula that they used for the meat.
totally lame.
PS i love lifetime
