Six Degrees Of INFEST: Part II

January 30th, 2007 by banana · 2 Comments

so we were walking around and we went into the wooden shoe, the long-standing bookstore for all sorts of anarchist and radical books, mags, etc. as well as fair-trade coffee, buttons with slogans, weirdo crap, etc. i think they even had manic panic at one point so you could make your hair all crazy and stupid looking. anways, we went in there for two things — to look at zines and to look at records. their record section was basically two small tables full of 30% punk records, 30% crappy “underground” hip hop and 40% utter shit. probably still is.

so i’m looking through the records and i flip through to the then recently released INFEST 12″ “No Man’s Slave” [Deep Six]. i didn’t have it and i wanted it. i look at the price sticker — 9.35. it always seemed that the wooden shoe was out to get you for that extra $.35 or whatever. sometimes 7″ records cost $3.15. come on. just charge $4. people will pay four. it even seems like less.

right about now, i realize that i have a mere $10 in my pocket. “damn,” i say aloud, “i really want to buy this.” i really did.

“then buy it,” says my record hunting companion, always the sagacious financier.

“but i only have $10.”

“that’s enough.”

“but then i can’t get any pizza.”

but even as i said the words, i knew the reply — pizza is temporal. records are forever. before mp3 blogs, soulseek, limewire, napster, OiNK and whatever else, this was real life.

i bought the record. it felt good. i held onto it the whole way home, hungering only for some fast parts and some breakdowns.

today, i still have that record. as for that slice of pizza? i would have shat it out like five years ago. and it would have been a lorenzo’s slice, which btw i don’t eat anymore because they raised the price to $2.25 and i think that’s stupid. the germs of an entire city’s quarters on every slice. not me buddy.

the end.
