I think i’m the only one that cares

January 29th, 2007 by jae kwon · 7 Comments

when i was flying back to LA from new york over MLK day, i saw tre cool at the airport.

aka the drummer for green day. he was not wearing eye make up. he was on his way to oakland, and i did not stop him to tell him how awesome i think he and his band are.

i spotted him in the jetblue terminal, as he walked to his gate. he held up his hand and waved at some hot (but modestly hot, nothing jaw dropping) adult type woman. i seriously wanted to stop him and talk to him, but the plane was boarding, and i didn’t want to have another awkward interaction with a quasi celebrity (laurie anderson, liz phair, morrissey–you are the unlucky ones). i wanted to call someone and share in my joy, but i couldn’t think of anyone that would actually care.

i’m the only one of my friends that didn’t start hating this band after dookie.

and to this day, i feel like i’m the only one of my friends or people i know that would be excited about this encounter. but i don’t give a shit. i still love this band. i still listen to them on a regular basis, and i still buy their new cd’s when they come out.

my favorite green day song: 2000 light years away.

my top 3 green day albums: (1) insomniac, (2) kerplunk, (3) american idiot

Substitute Tre’ Cool with Ian MacKaye and then they’ll care. Why? Because Minor-Threat is and always will be the epitome of DIY and hardcore and Green Day will always be the quintessential ‘sell-out’ band? That’s nonsense – you don’t have to adapt to some kind of punk bylaw that says you must hate any and everything that is not underground.
I think is wonderful that you got energized at your celeb spotting. Maybe seeing Tre’ sent you back to a time when you were 1st discovering music, Green Day was probably a big part of that. A band that was yours’…before it was cool to hate them.
How many people reading this hate Henry Rollins or Civ for their quote unquote selling out? – Now take a look in you CD collection, you’ve all got ‘Damaged’ and ‘Start-Today’…you’ve probably got ‘Dookie’ to boot.
I think it’s pretty punk rock when a ‘Civ’ song is used for a nation wide commercial campaign. Bring up the Gorilla Biscuits when the commercial comes on; introduce someone to the classic album ‘Start Today’. Start a dialogue.
What, What, WHAT…blasphemy? Teach someone about our scene / learn about someone else’s taste. No, that can’t happen – b/c it wouldn’t be punk rock. Well, it wouldn’t be punk rock to that ‘guy’ we all know who actually saw Minor-Threat in 1982 – the guy that missed the ‘adult crash’.
    …Grow up !!!

Gene Simmons said it best when in reference to KISS being labeled as ‘sellouts’ “you’re damn right, we sell out each and every night”…not an empty seat in the club.

maybe he was going to gilman. or he was gonna get his thizz face on w/ e-40.

also, jet blue from jfk-oak, is usually a phenomenal deal. i have routinely gotten tickets for just about $100 one-way.

you got some good points, anonymous… not mad at bands for managing to make a living out of their music… but there’s nothing punk about making commercials for bullshit. lose alot of respect for any band that i hear selling some bullshit….
