Legendary Philly Radio DJ Colby Colb Says “Goodbye” Via Youtube
July 2nd, 2008 by Labuda · 1 Comment
Oh no! 215hiphop is reporting that Colby is no longer going to be Program Director or on the air at 100.3 The Beat. Colby has always been one of my favorite Philly radio DJ’s. He’d always have great stories about ‘back-in-the-day’ topics and he seemed to genuinely love hip-hop.
In his absence, look forward to hearing the same Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Plies songs over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

The Wizard of OZ?
July 2nd, 2008 by Labuda · 1 Comment

Here’s a weird one - back in the middle of the night in August 2007, a guy began to spray-paint a congratulatory message to a newlywed couple on the side wall of a store. Two of his friends acted as lookouts. Two Philly cops allegedly jumped out of their squad car and chased the graffiti artist. When they caught him, the officers allegedly beat him up and then let him go.
The graff artist’s friends took him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to repair a broken jaw, which was wired shut for five weeks.
Now, there is some hilarious speculation that the man that the police beat - 37 year old David Vernitsky of the Logan section of Philly - is OZ, a graffiti artist who’s been tagging all over Philadelphia for the past 20 years.
The best part of the story is that a day after the Philly DA filed charges against the cops, the Philadelphia Daily News ran a pic of Vernitsky wearing a T-shirt reading, “Hello, my name is OH-ZEE.”
In a recent DN article, Vernitsky claims that he is a big Wizard Of Oz fan but that he is not thee OZ - although he claims that he knows who OZ is. Haha! Even if he isn’t OZ, this story has urban legend potential.

Watch For Flying Bats
June 30th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

This past Friday, Pie and I were sitting around talking about how we’ve noticed a lot of baseball bats breaking this year. Little did I know that Jim Salisbury would have a story in Sunday’s Inquierer about that very topic. It seems that baseball bats are shattering all too often lately.
Here I was thinking that a baseball bat was a baseball bat - apparently, I was wrong.
Kinda makes you wonder how Chase Utley’s legendary batting practice bat lasted so long.
Of course, none of this matters to the Phils - who haven’t been hitting much of anything lately.

Call of Duty Naming Contest
June 19th, 2008 by nops · 1 Comment

As more and more details about the upcoming Treyarch game, CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR, emerge, a number of fans are left wondering what those crazy devs are thinking. Since the Great War that gave us the Greatest Generation keeps trying again and again to give us a Great Game AND to celebrate the release of the trailer, we here at Fun Vampires are holding a contest to lend Treyarch and Activision a helping hand with suggestions for future Call of Duty games based on other battles and wars. Some of our suggestions from the message board after the jump, along with more information on the contest and rules; don’t be afraid to submit your own! Through a special arrangement with Activision*(ok, not really), our winner will get some sweet swag! (still true!)

Sick New Street Collabo: ESPO X Fulbright Scholarship
June 9th, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments

And his time in Ireland. “The awards primarily go to scholars and professionals who go abroad to pursue research and teach in academic and specialized fields. Thirty-seven Fulbright winners have also received Nobel Prizes……Although a Fulbright scholar typically must have a doctorate, Mr. Powers, an art school dropout, was granted an exception because of his achievement in the arts.” - New York Times

Radiohead, Nude, undressed & remixed
June 6th, 2008 by Hans · No Comments
James Houston has taken the Technicolor dreamcoat off of Radiohead’s NUDE and remixed it or maybe you could say de-mixed it. Utilizing hard drive speakers, a Sinclar ZX Spectrum, Epson LX-86 dot matrix printer, and a HP Scanjet 4c to recreate the song with yesteryear’s technology, James masterfully created something new and made it old again. Not only does it sound wonderful but it’s filmed quite beautifully. via Engadget and Hackaday.

Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk - January 4, 2008 - North Philly
June 3rd, 2008 by Labuda · No Comments
Way way back when it was a cold winter, the White Ts White Belts party (with DJ’s Emynd and Bo Bliz - who we talked about last week) played host to a totally D.I.Y. live performance by Philadelphia’s own Freeway. Patrons at the Arts Garage (R.I.P.?) were treated to a bunch of Freeway songs when, from out of nowhere, State Prop pals Peedi Crakk and Beanie Sigel stepped up to, uh, rock tha mic. Check out how hype the crowd gets when Beanie steps out! It was a pretty awesome night and it easily ranks as one of the best live shows I’ve been to this year.

Emynd and Bo Bliz - Philly Cats Keeping It Real
May 23rd, 2008 by Labuda · 1 Comment

One of the things I love about Philadelphia so much is that most of the time hype doesn’t matter here. Image and hype bullshit doesn’t necessarily work here - you have to rock shit to get people to respect you. And, Philly is a crabs-in-a-barrel kind of town - jealously runs rampant and haters are always trying to pull people back down. It’s hard to breakout and be a success. You’ve got to really come correct on so many different fronts. You’ve got to really grind. But when someone does gain some traction here in Philly, then watch out because chances are that they are unfuckwithable on so many different levels.
Case in point is Emynd and Bo Bliz. They are probably best known as the guys behind the successful DJ night White T’s and White Belts but that isn’t all that they do. They’ve worked with Philly rappers. They’ve produced some club-oriented party tracks. I respect them for their skills but what I respect most about them is that they have always done things on their own. They don’t wait for someone to hand them something. They don’t bitch and moan about how they deserve this or that. They get out there and do it themselves. While the two aren’t exactly punk rock in an aesthetic sense, what they are doing is pretty punk rock by me.
Check out this interview with them at 215hiphop.com to get a better idea of where these guys are coming from.
